Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand...
My engagement ring is suddenly, mysteriously no longer on my finger. i have a horrible feeling that it may be in the washing machine, but it's in mid cycle. Hmm.
Husband has a really interesting theory about Ashes 2 Ashes.
It isn't Alex's Coma-Dream. It's her daughter's. She was shot under the bridge, everything since has been Molly(?)'s dream. After all, she has read Sam Tyler's file too. From a filmic narrative perspective, this makes a lot of sense. It opens on Molly's voice, almost as a voice over, suggesting she could be the protagonist. That gunshot under the bridge has to be significant, certainly, and it would explain why the only voice from outside is Molly's. She's not telling alex that she's dying, she's telling herself. It's not Alex soaking wet and dying at the riverside, it's her. Look at the childlike little touches... Alex flicking V-Signs and slurping the too-full glass of wine - Shaz seems very childlike, she'd be the only main character to be completely invented by this new dreamer.
Possible problems with this theory are:
This means Molly is setting her fantasy in a time that she hasn't lived through. But this could explain why so much of what we've seen of Life in 1981 so far has been so referential to Pop videos, movies, TV Shows etc from the era... she has no genuine memory of the early 80s so she calls on media images of the era instead.
Why 1981? It seems to be significant to Alex and her parentage, but not so much for Molly. If there really is an ongoing story arc about the truth behind Alex's parents that might explain why Alex would choose that year, but wouldn't that be way too much like the first series of LoM? It could just be that Molly heard the gunman mention Alex's mother, recalled that both those grandparents died in 1981 and her subconcious has fabricated this story - particularly if Sam included the story about his father in his file, and Molly read it.
If this is true, then you've got a storyline that's basically a little girl inventing a sexual relationship for her Mum, which is icky.
Really interesting how all the main characters have been changed and feminised as seen through this new, female psyche, but that's a different story!
I still prefer LoM, I'm not entirely sure about it, but if it makes me think this much then it's deffo worth sticking with.
Chris and Shazza are thoroughly adorkable too. Luvvem.
