Stupid People

A Twitter friend has managed to get Common People going round & round in my head lately, and a comment to [livejournal.com profile] capt_spork during the riots about Sherlock living in a flat above a shop made me decide to rewrite the song to fit with Sherlock. I didn't include the 'like a dog lying in a corner' part from the album version (even though that's my favourite bit of the song) because it would have made the whole thing far too bitter. I wanted John's POV to be one of fond despair, irritation & worry, whereas that section of the song is just so angry and so specifically about poverty that I just couldn't do it justice.

Here it is!

He came from Sussex, had a thirst for knowledge,
He studied Chemistry at Magdalen College,
Met at Bart’s
Over body parts.
He told me I was a messed-up Mister,
Hated my brother, I said ‘Ha! No – my sister’
He said ‘fine’.
And then in thirty seconds time he said
‘Don’t wanna be with stupid people,’
‘Don’t wanna do whatever stupid people do,’
‘Don’t wanna sleep with stupid people,’
‘Don’t wanna sleep with stupid people like you.’
Well, what else could I do?
I said ‘I’m moving in with you.’

He wouldn’t help me at the supermarket.
I don’t know why, sat around in the dark, looking grim
Playing violin.
I told him that we had no money.
He just laughed and said ‘you’re so funny’,
I said ‘thanks,’
Once we’d been paid by the bank.
‘Are you sure you want no truck with us stupid people?’
‘You feel no luck when the idiots are all that you can see?’
‘That you’re just stuck with the stupid people?
‘Don’t give a fuck about stupid people like me?’

But he didn’t seem to care, he just huffed and kicked a chair.

Rent a flat above a shop, grow your hair, invent a job,
Give up fags, blow up a pool, say that you went to public school,
But still you’ll never be alone, not with you internet and phone,
Watching snipers climb a fall, if you called in time, we could stop it all, yeah,

You’d never live like the stupid people,
You’d never feel the heat of stupid people’s shame,
You’d never fail like the stupid people,
You’d never watch your life go up in flames
And get hooked on cheap cocaine
Because it helps avoid the pain.

Play along with the stupid people,
Play along and it might just get you through,
Point and laugh at the stupid people,
Even though they’re laughing right back at you
And the stupid things that you do,
‘Cause you’re a stupid person, too.
