So. The McCanns. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6983604.stm

Call me a cynical old CowBag if you wish, but... has anybody else really had their suspicions about the parents for some time now? I don't know - they just seem to be basking in their status too much. And I know, I know, I've never been in the position, thank the Gods, where my daughter has been missing/presumed dead so i don't know how I'd react, and if that were ever to happen it would be my worst nightmare, and if they *are* innocent, how terrible to be suspected of your child's death.

But.

I've just never found myself able to buy the British paper's line about it - pretty little blonde daughter of married British couple disappears abroad, so it must be that she was snatched to order by horrible Paedophiles who wanted a blonde, blue eyed girl, because they're organised, you know, and they work in gangs, and no child is safe etc etc and the reason that a, the child hasn't been found and b, the parents are now suspects is because the foreign police are too lazy to look for her and are fitting the parents up for exposing them as the lazy bastards they are. It just all sounds too much like a Tabloid's Dream Story. At the end of the day, most victims of abuse and murder know their attackers, for all the papers' scaremongering about organised baby snatching gangs. It's like nobody wants to admit that the threat to your child is from people you know, not faceless thugs, because that leaves the responsibility with you. Plus the fear of the faceless thug is the sort of paranoia that sells papers.

Whether they were directly involved in whatever happened to their daughter, the McCanns were negligent, and without their negligence Madeline wouldn't have disappeared. And yet the British press still holds them up as if they were saints. Would they really have reacted in the same way if Madeline was the daughter of a single mother? Or a Gay/Lesbian couple? Or not White?

I might be completely wrong. Of course, it's possible that the parents are indeed innocent (if negligent) parties, and I believe that everyone should be innocent until proven guilty. But I get a nagging little thought every time I hear about this case, that their intense courtship of the media isn't necessarily for the sake of their daughter.
