r_scribbles: (D&D E/D Flirt)
Good question from [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 today!

Who are your five favourite female characters of colour?

1 - Diana The Acrobat (Diana Jones in my headcanon) from Dungeons & Dragons Cartoon. A proper 'get up and go' old school action heroine. Independent, smart and the most physically able member of the D&DC kids she makes a natural second in command to Hank, and her sparky, flirtatious arguments with Eric hit all of my shippy buttons. In the episode in which she falls in love, it is HER who rescues her male love interest. Compare & contrast with other female characters from 80s Action Cartoons, who seemed to exist to get saved by the boys. What a gal.

2 - Zoe Washburn from Firefly/Serenity. Again, an action gal, paired with a less physically able, wisecracking guy. Zoe's able to hold her own in a very male environment while remaining thoroughly feminine, she's able to juggle being Mal's second in command and Wash's wife. She's hilariously deadpan, and did I mention sexy? Yow. the Zoe/Wash element is one of my favourite in Firefly. I'd have loved to have seen them have a baby. The idea of a pregnant action heroine is really interesting, and I think Zoe could have pulled it off.

3 - Irene Adler Norton from the Cumberholmes RP. Irene in Sherlock S2 almost certainly won't be African American, but more importantly, she won't be anything like this Irene. I doubt she'll be as funny, or as well rounded (not just physically!) or as warm or as lovable. She started off as a little throwaway gag, then turned into a sideline character who, due to her being in New York, never physically interacted with the other characters, rather teasing them and occasionally flirting with them from a distance. I don't think either of us intended for the Sherlock/Irene relationship to get to the stage that it did, it was just a natural progression. And for two funny looking people, they ain't half a sexy pair!

4 - Selena from 28 Days Later. Again with the action heroines! I really liked Selena in this film - damaged, hurting, hardened by the things she'd seen and had to do in order to survive, but with a tender heart - willing in the end, to sacrifice herself so that a girl can get away from gang rapists, even willing to risk being infected in order to give Jim the benefit of the doubt.

5 - Amy Wong from Futurama. Just because she's hilaire. And the Amy/Kif relationship is so beyond adorable. Her big jokes are her klutziness and pampered background but again, she's very capable and kick ass when needs be.

Yes, I am aware that I ship all of the Black women in this list with really, really White guys. And ship the only East Asian (although that doesn't mean much since she's technically from Mars) with a little green man. It's a thing I have. Shut up.
