30 Days Fic Meme - Days 16 & 17
Sep. 17th, 2011 02:26 pmCheck me out, falling into my lazy '2 questions every 2 days' pattern.
16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
They're difficult, certainly - especially on FF.net when you're very limited as to the amount of characters you get to do them in. Posting on FF.net for a long time probably did me a lot of good, actually - helped me hone the ability to entice readers in with one or two short sentences. Generally, I'll try to summarise the essence of the story in a way that looks interesting - maybe throw in a couple of random elements from the story, especially if the story has comic elements, and/or set up a mystery that will hopefully draw people in.
17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?
Neither. They're just another element of the story. I think they're important to get right - I'll often start off with a working title just so I've got something to save the file under, and then change it later. I think 'Merde, He Wrote' is still my favourite title yet. I quite like the idea of making any other Sherlock/Cabin Pressure crossover titles '[name of destination used in story], or [ACD-esque name of mystery]', as a running gag.
