Bafta screeners have started coming through, so we *finally* have Star Trek XI. We saw it tonight, and... I liked it. I really liked it. I apologise for nothing and my only regret is that I have Boneitis!
My only gripes were that Uhura only seemed to exist to get felt up, fought over, perved over or snogged although I thought the Uhura/Spock thing was fun - I always knew he could win a girl off Kirk without even trying and that Bones didn't get to do more because Karl Urban's McCoy was engaging and charming. Loved Pegg!Scotty, really loved PineKirk - felt he channeled all the best bits of The Shat without. Resorting to the... FAMOUS!... stilteddelivery... QuintoSpock was good too, I suppose the narrative of the film called for his emotions to be more raw and less contained than NimoySpock's...I do love it when Spock Hulks Out in TOS, but only because he does it so rarely... if he's going to go all Amok Time twice a movie or every time someone disses his Momma it might not have the same appeal.

- Liked little nods to TOS and the movies - Pike in a wheelchair; Scotty being obsessed with food; Kirk cheating and Torture By Earwig referencing Wrath of KHHHAAAAAAAANNNN.
- Sulu's foldy-outy sword - awesome.
- Kirk's allergic reaction. Wonderful. 'Fat handed TWAT!'
- Scotty in the tubes. 'Augustus Gloop, Augustus Gloop, the great big swollen ninconpoop...'
- I appreciate that this is now an AU, after all, the Trek Multiverse already has so very many of them, it's hardly wild new territory, plus this means anyone can die and anything can happen. But the way the script explained this...? The characters may as well just have sat down, looked straight at the camera and told us directly what was going to happen. There really wasn't much of a fourth wall for a while back there.
- Also, I'm confused. If Spock Prime is 'our' Spock; from the same reality as TOS and all that followed, then does that mean that in the main Trek Canon, Romulus has been destroyed? And why weren't those Romulans greeny? Where were their pudding bowl haircuts and godawful shoulder pads? Hmm? Answer me that with your precious logic. And does this now mean that 'our' Spock is trapped for the rest of his days in an alternative past, setting up a sad little colony for a handful of elderly Vulcan refugees and trying to avoid his youthful, hot-colleague-face-sucking self for risk of embarrasment? Because that makes me feel sad.
- If Husband had told Chekov to 'Spool up the FTL Drives' one more time, I swear I'd have lamped him. I liked the way the ships bang into warp in the film though.
- We also both really, really wanted PStew to sidle into frame during the credits. 'Hello. Is it my bit now? I brought a song with me. A-one, a-two, a-one-two-three-four... *cut to black*.
But most of all, you know what? It was bloody good fun. Me likey.
