Boo Humbug.
Oct. 31st, 2007 08:33 pmWe're being Humbugs. We considered getting a box of Celebrations or Summat but decided against it since:
a, There are no kids on our street. It's almost all students. We certainly aren't known to any kids in the area, and really kiddies shouldn't go round knocking on strangers doors demanding presents in return for not vandalising your house no matter what night it is.
b, We only got a couple of groups of Trick or Treaters on halloween itself last year, and most of the ones that we did get (usually about a week early... possibly to catch folks of guard) were four teenage boys with a single mask between them, all wanting a quid each, and that's not Trick or Treating, that's aggressive begging
c, I did get a mental play flashing through my mind, were I to find myself with the customary 4-teenagers-with-mask and offer them a couple of mini Mars Bars, and it went like this:
Chavs: Trick or Treat!
Me: Here you go. Take a couple.
Chavs: Chocolate?
Me: Yes.
Chavs We want money.
Me: You can't have money. The chocolate is your treat. Take it or leave it.
Chavs: We're too old for chocolate!
Me: Well then, you're too old to be Trick or Treating.
*Door Slam*
CUT TO THREE DAYS LATER. I NOW HAVE MADE ENEMIES OF A TROUPE OF CHAVS WHO KNOW WHERE I LIVE AND SMASHY SMASH GO MY WINDOWS.
Which isn't very nice.
Besides, I do kind of resent the whole Trick or Treat thing, since it's not a British tradition, our kids have just adopted it since that great decade of peace, love and understanding the 1980s (Is there anything bad in this world I can't find a way of blaming Thatcher for? :)) because it's a way of getting free stuff of people who owe you Jack Shit. So THERE!
We've only had one knock anyway, so it's not like they're missing out!
Gone are the days for me, alas, when Halloween meant a big old fancy dress party. Not even watching a scary fillum tonight since we don't really have time after dinner has been eaten and cleaned up after. Watching some Simpsons Halloween specials and Heroes. That'll have to do!
