Ugh, still behind on this thing.

12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

Sort of, but without so much as being able to complete it or even write enough of an extract that I've been happy enough to share, so far. See, I really want to write how the universe of one of my fandoms would react to the invasion of Wells' Martians. I can't even really call it a crossover, since the fic would have a very similar overall plot to that of War of the Worlds - the first landing, the attack on London/any other large city, the panicked mob trying to flee the city, the Martians eventually succumbing to Earth's bacteria and so on. First, I wanted to write it in the TNG Fandom, either with the 'Martians' (actually aliens from much further away than Mars, but who had burrowed deep under Mars' surface to recuperate in stasis after crashing there hundreds of years before) attacking Earth in the 24th Century, shortly after it's recovering from the Borg's assault in First Contact, or in the late 19th Century, and for some reason the TNG crew hve been sent back in time. Again. In this case, it was going to be Paris, not London, that is attacked, and I have vague ideas as to what would happen - snippets, really - them trying to fight their way through a panicked crush of people along the bank of the Seine as a fighting machine wades after them, getting separated in the stampede. I have an image of a really brutal fight between Data and a fighting machine, too - real tearing off limbs, ripping up lamp posts & hitting one another with them stuff. Alas, snippets are all I have in my head.

I also have snippets of how Sherlock vs the Martians would work - up to a point. That's one that I might be more inclined to actually write. Sherlock vs the Triffids intrigues me, too - only it would be John who would be in Bill Masen's position. Sherlock would be blinded like the vast majority of the rest of the population, and would be reliant on John - at least, at the start. Jim would take the position as the new, despotic ruler of the country, Mycroft would have a Coker-ish role, albeit rather more authoritative until things start going tits up with the first attempt at restoring order. Again, though, I'm not sure that these ideas are well developed enough for me to sit down and write them - they'd be pretty long if I did.

13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

I like to use canon as a springboard - there are some elements of fanon that are great fun, others that irritate me and just feel silly or repetitive (hence my Sherlock Bad Porn - mocking the fanon tropes that annoy me the most). I have my own headcanon and usually I rely on that more than commonly accepted fanon. But really I don't think it matters that much. Fics that get bogged down too much with canon details can be pretty dull at times, you know. Accurate, but dull.
