Bits and pieces
Jan. 18th, 2009 03:08 pmToday is a very important day for me and Big NC - for it was a decade ago this very night that he asked me to go out with him, and apart from the odd hiccup along the line we've been together ever since!
We were going to get a curry to celebrate, but we're a bit Celebrationed Out after a lunch of party food and a dinner of Chinese with the folks yesterday, so we're saving it for later in the week.
We watched Mike Leigh's Happy Go Lucky last night - after I'd complained since the only films of Mike Leigh's I could remember were Naked, which I'd hated, and Vera Drake, which isn't exactly a light hearted romp for all the family. Anyway, I really enjoyed it - it was very funny, once you get used to the protagonist's at first grating cheeriness, she's very endearing, Eddie Marsan was fantastic as ever, and it really made me think as well. The only bits that annoyed me were the bit with the tramp and the bit with her pregnant sister, since I thought the former was very unrealistic and made her look like a feckless idiot and the latter was a bit of a cliche... although I can see that if you look at those scenes as being allegorical, the one with the tramp showing how she wants to go out of her way to help absolutely everyone and the one with her sister representing the pressure put on women of 25+ to settle down, get a mortgage, a husband and a sprog when that might just not be what they want out of life. I did find myself feeling mildly jealous of Poppy's freedom... although, not that jealous. You could almost suggest that in a way, she has settled down - she has a career, and she lives with the soulmate that she found 10 years ago... albeit, this soulmate is her best friend rather than her spouse. Still, I think that if I knew Poppy in real life I would find her exhausting. Still, I'd recommend it. It's like Bridget Jones' Indie, Brainy, idiosynchratic,fast-talking little sister.
Beautiful day today, innit? It almost smells like Spring. Almost.
